Maritime Industry Knowledge Centre

The project is designed to enrich human knowledge and understanding of the vital roles of maritime transport and commercial shipping in the economic, social, political and cultural life of the global environment.

The overarching objectives are:

  • to improve the image of shipping
  • to heighten awareness of international shipping
  • to attract young people both to the seafaring professions and to careers onshore

The Maritime Industry Foundation was established by the Round Table (BIMCO, ICS, Intercargo, INTERTANKO) and endorsed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2005 as an independent, not-for-profit registered charity.

The Foundation is a membership organisation funded by subscriptions and donations from corporate companies and individuals. There are four categories of membership: corporate, individual, educator, student.

The main activities of the Foundation are:

  • The Maritime Industry Knowldege Centre
  • Careers and Training Web Resource
  • Academic Research and Development Web Resource
  • Awareness and Outreach Programmes

INTERTANKO has been instrumental in establishing the Foundation and this project is part of the INTERTANKO Work Programme in support of maritime education, improving the image of the industry and its overall aims of striving for continious improvement.
