Suez Canal Northbound tanker transits up (significant increase for 50-100,000 dwt sizes) but Southbound VL transits down

The above graph shows that the number of northbound Suez Canal transits increased slightly in 2004 compared to 2003. The number of transits of tankers below 50,000 dwt declined by 0.3%, those of tankers 50,000-100,000 dwt increased by 30.2%, those of tankers 100,000-200,00 dwt increased by 10.0%, and those of tankers above 200,000 dwt declined by 2.6%.
With regard to southbound VLCCs in ballast, the number of transits in 2004 was 192 compared to 242 in 2003, a decline of some 21%. This reflects the fact that Europe is taking less oil from the Middle East and more from the Former Soviet Union, in particular from Russia.
