INTERTANKO Annual Event – New York 6-9 May 2014, don't miss out!

INTERTANKO’s Annual Event is this year to take place in New York 6-9 May 2014. It brings together our Members and Associate Members and a formidable group of top-level industry figures to continue discussions about how our industry can adapt for survival, and also to work through a number of crucial issues at a practical level in workshops.

The Keynote speech at our one day high-level seminar ‘Sustainability – Moving the Story On’ on Thursday 8 May 2014 will be given by Michael Tusiani, Chairman of Poten & Partners and author of numerous articles and books about the shipping industry.

In 1985, Tusiani spoke at INTERTANKO’s 15th Anniversary Conference, which highlighted the responsible tanker owners’ dilemma. “Not much seems to matter except the rate,” he said. “Charterers won’t pay a premium for quality, or reputation, or relationships, or the long term. The only way an owner can get voyage business is to quote a lower rate than anyone else.” Times were simple…

By 2003, the tanker owners’ dilemma had become rather more complex. That year, Tusiani chaired an Open Market Session at INTERTANKO’s annual event called Coping with unpredictability. Geopolitical risk, economic malaise, regulatory changes, oil company standards and practices and incidents began to pepper the market introducing new challenges and unforeseen costs to the shipowning community.

Today, these challenges still persist despite the booms and busts of freight rates and asset prices. While ‘wild cards’ remain a mainstay of the tanker industry, the nature of ship ownership appears to have fundamentally changed. Tusiani will explore the evolution of shipping companies from predominantly family-owned businesses to Wall Street and private equity behemoths. As the objectives of the old and new may be quite different, what will the future hold?

We are gathering a host of top quality speakers and panellists, including Luc Gillet, Director of Maritime Transport with Total Trading & Shipping; Bob Flynn, President of MJLF & Associates; Jack Warfield, President of the Society of Maritime Arbitrators; Andrew Smiley, Manager Martine Operations at Koch Shipping; Tom Pappas, Director Marine Transportation at Sapient Global Markets; David Brummond, Senior Sanctions Advisor – Insurance, Office of Foreign Assets Control, US Treasury Department, to name but a few.

There will also be many opportunities to network with colleagues and peers and compare notes on how our industry is developing, with the Annual Dinner and an informal social event which follows the Seminar as well as a full Partner’s Programme.

Registrations are now open, so don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to attend what promises to be one of the highlights of the tanker shipping year. Click here to complete the online registration process.
