Annual Events

Innovation to the fore as INTERTANKO’s Annual Tanker Event 2016 delivers

A hallmark of this year’s INTERTANKO Annual Tanker Event held 25-27 May in Singapore was the use of Pigeonhole, a web-based program which allowed delegates to pose questions (anonymously if they wished) to the speakers. The introduction of the system proved inspired – democratising the Q&A sections of each session and giving equal opportunity to those wanting to be heard.

Across two days a full range of commercial, operational and technical issues were covered. The first day focused on the ‘big picture’ with scene setting remarks from Andrew Tan, Chief Executive, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and Michael Syn, Executive VP and Head of Derivatives, SGX. From here Asian Markets and Geopolitics were assessed and moderated by international news journalist, Sharanjit Leyl. Commercial considerations were to the fore in a session chaired by Braemar Managing Director Denis Petropoulos, which united a mix of owners and charterers on the stage.

The second day was all about getting into the detail of operations. Two parallel streams, one for liquid bulk the other for gas carriers (see separate articles) meant that a more forensic approach to the issues could be taken, whether it was on ballast water, fuel quality, learning from incidents, vetting requirements or the IGC Code.

A positive atmosphere pervaded this year’s Annual Conference. To a significant extent, this can be explained by the state of the market or ‘sweet spot’ it current enjoys. But it is not the entire story. What also elevated this year’s event was the impressive setting and slick organisation. Sessions were evenly spaced and paced. Speakers were high-level as was the discourse. The networking opportunities were generous, the exhibition buzzing and the social programme and dinner excellent.

Singapore 2016 can be seen as a continuation of the direction set with last year’s event in Athens. Next year’s event in Houston will have a lot to live up to.
