AMERICAN PETROLEUM INSTITUTE (API) 2002 TANKER CONFERENCE IN LA JOLLA

Managing Director, Peter Swift represented INTERTANKO at the American Petroleum Institute (API) 2002 Tanker Conference in La Jolla 24-25 June.

Dr. Swift also participated in a Panel discussion on ‘The Evolving Demands on Class Societies’ alongside Mike Carthew (ChevronTexaco), Vice President OCIMF, and John Ridgway (BP), Chairman API Marine Committee. Earlier in the session, Bob Somerville, President of ABS, Tor Svensen, VP and Technical Director of DNV and Alan Gavin, Marine Director of Lloyd’s Register had spoken on the same subject.

Included in the discussions were several references to the constructive dialogue that exists between OCIMF, INTERTANKO and Class Societies on tanker issues. The industry representatives also took the opportunity to say a few words about their respective associations, and on other aspects of the conference theme of ‘Emerging Relationships’. INTERTANKO highlighted the emphasis placed on industry partnerships to advance the goal of quality shipping and the need for enhanced dialogue between the industry players, including shipbuilders.
