INTERTANKO CONTINUES TO HIGHLIGHT THE UNACCEPTABLE HIGH NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS WITH LIFEBOATS

In 2001 INTERTANKO raised the matter of lifeboat accidents in DE/44 (Design & Equipment Sub Committee) in conjunction with ICS, OCIMF and SIGTTO. In May the Marine Safety Committee (MSC) approved the circular relating to lifeboat accidents as proposed by D&E at IMO. This MSC circular has just been released this week and members are urged to disseminate the circular to draw attention to the issue.

The unacceptability of the high number of accidents with lifeboats that have occurred over recent years and in which crew were injured, sometimes fatally, while participating in lifeboat drills and/or inspections has been of major concern for some time. In 2001 INTERTANKO raised the matter of lifeboat accidents in DE/44 (Design & Equipment Sub Committee) in conjunction with ICS, OCIMF and SIGTTO.

At that time INTERTANKO was successful in having the issue placed as a ‘high priority item’on the DE agenda. Also the Marine Safety Committee (MSC) approved the circular relating to lifeboat accidents as proposed by D&E (Design & Equipment) which we reported in our Weekly NEWS of 24 May. The MSC circularMSC Circ.1049 has now just been released this week and the link is can be fond here.

INTERTANKO urges members to disseminate this circular within your respective companies, to your vessels’ officers and crews, so as to draw attention to the problems with lifeboats and subsequent accidents that may occur during routine drills and maintenance.

As part of the ongoing work by INTERTANKO, we are working together with video training companies in the production of lifeboat training videos and participating with several lifeboat and davit manufacturers with the objective to improve current designs and enhance safety aspects.
