INTERTANKO MD, Peter Swift, gave an informal talk to the Propeller Club in London on Tuesday 23 January, in which he highlighted some of the challenges facing the tanker industry today and the steps that need to be taken to address these.

During his presentation he contrasted the reality of an industry with a continuously improving safety record, which is highly responsible, providing an essential transportation service on a very cost effective basis, with the often public perception of an irresponsible, generally unsafe and poorly regulated industry. Highlighting the role of others in the chain of responsibility to achieve the standards and performance expected by society today, he described some of the major issues for the tanker industry.

As regards solutions to these challenges, he suggested among others the need for more open dialogue between the principal parties, improved feedback loops, better accident investigations, a greater respect for professionalism, and consistent enactment and enforcement of legislation and regulations on a global basis.
