INTERTANKO plans busy week in Singapore

The International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO) is to organise and participate in a series of events in Singapore during the week 12 - 15 May 1997 that will promote the presence of tanker shipping in South East Asia. The events are scheduled together with and following the 6th Asian Shipowners Forum.

INTERTANKO will hold the inaugural meeting of its new Asia Regional Panel at the Westin Stamford and Westin Plaza Hotel on 13 May while a Media Training Course has been organised for 15 May to coincide with the inaugural Panel Meeting. INTERTANKO is establishing the Asia Regional Panel after receiving strong support for the idea of an industry forum to address tanker issues particular to Asia from amongst the region’s tanker shipping community. The panel is open to members from Australia, Hong Kong, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Thailand and Vietnam. The first Panel meeting, with an attendance of about 40 delegates, will review a number of topical issues, including slop reception and emergency response capabilities in the region, the quality of bunkers supplied in Singapore, ship inspection initiatives and Chinese rules for safe ship-to-ship cargo transfers in local waters. The associated Media Management Training Course is especially tailored to help shipowners prepare themselves to address the media in the event of an incident. This follows the establishment of the Hellenic Regional Panel earlier in the spring which will in a similar way look at matters in the Eastern Mediterranean area.

INTERTANKO’s Managing Director, Dagfinn Lunde will be in Singapore together with Ms Minerva Alfonso, the Section Manager for IT and Accounts who is also responsible for looking after the interests of the INTERTANKO membership in East Asia (excluding Japan), to participate in the INTERTANKO Asian Regional Panel meeting. Mr. Lunde will also make a presentation to the 6th Asian Shipowners Forum at the Raffles City Convention Centre on 12 May. The theme of this conference will be ‘Dialogue with International Bodies’ and Mr. Lunde will be in the company of senior representatives from the leading international shipping industry associations.

Singapore has also been selected as the venue for the Spring 1998 INTERTANKO Tanker Event which is arranged together with the Annual General Meeting and the spring Council Meeting. Tanker Events are the Association’s new series of biannual conferences and exhibitions for the overall tanker industry, not just INTERTANKO membership. The Singapore Tanker Event is schedules for 4-7 May 1998. For more information contact:
