INTERTANKO Reaffirms ISM Commitment

The Executive Committee of INTERTANKO, the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners, reaffirmed at its meeting in Vancouver BC, Canada, its commitment to the International Safety Management Code. "It is a requirement for membership in INTERTANKO that all members must have completed their ISM certification by the implementation date, 1st July this 1998. Members who do not fulfil this requirement will not be able to continue as members", the Chairman, Richard du Moulin told a press conference in Vancouver today. The press conference took place immediately after a reception co-hosted by TEEKAY Shipping (Canada) Ltd, Valles Steamship (Canada) Ltd, Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia and the International Maritime Centre of Vancouver.

The Vancouver meeting offered senior tanker executives the opportunity to meet the growing shipping community in Vancouver. The next meetings will be in Singapore in May and in Brussels in October.

The Executive Committee reviewed the effects of economic conditions
in the Far East on shipping markets. Current economic conditions reinforce awareness of the extent to which the livelihoods of tanker owners are subject to external macro-economic factors beyond the control of an owner. Individual owners face difficult decisions about ordering and scrapping in the face of such volatile conditions.

INTERTANKO underlined the important role of the International Association of Classification Societies, IACS, and its individual members. It is essential for safety that the Classification Societies fulfil their role in a strict and efficient manner. The classification societies are one of the most important participants in the maritime safety structure.

Two of INTERTANKO’s membership criteria - vessel classification and ISM compliance - depend upon Classification Societies performing
their services. Richard du Moulin was pleased to see the fine progress made by INTERTANKO members in obtaining their ISM certification. As of 31st December 1997, 68% of INTERTANKO members have obtained their ISM Document of Compliance for their organisations. INTERTANKO will shortly release figures covering Safety Management Certificates of its members tankers.
