INTERTANKO recruits former U.S. Coastguard executive Joe Angelo

Former United States Coast Guard Director of Standards for Marine Safety Joe Angelo joins INTERTANKO as its representative in North America effective Monday 10th January, 2005. He will be based in Washington DC, as Director – Americas and Regulatory Affairs, taking over the North American role of Dragos Rauta who remains as Director of INTERTANKO’s Technical and Engineering Division, but is now operating from the association’s Oslo office.

Angelo’s wide-ranging experience, technical expertise and sheer enthusiasm will give a different impetus to the Association’s work both in North America and worldwide.

A 1971 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point, New York, Angelo joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1977 as a project engineer. By the early 1990s he was heading the Merchant Vessel Inspection Division and was a member of the elite U.S Federal Government’s Senior Executive Service. He was the first Director of Standards for Marine Safety, Security and Environmental Protection in the newly-formed Standards Directorate, a position he held from 1995 until his recent retirement from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG).

For almost 25 years Angelo has represented the United States at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a technical advisor, heading numerous U.S. delegations to working groups, sub-committee and committee meetings. In 2003 he had the distinction of chairing the Maritime Safety Committee, the IMO’s highest technical body.

Having received no fewer than six major awards for service and achievement including two Presidential Distinguished Service Awards, Angelo received in 2004 the Chamber of Shipping of America’s Halert C. Shepheard Award, presented for exceptional contributions to maritime safety.

“On behalf of the entire INTERTANKO membership, I want to welcome Joe Angelo to our team,” says INTERTANKO Chairman Stephen Van Dyck. “With his excellent background covering a broad sweep of issues vital to tanker owners, with his terrific technical knowledge and familiarity with the regulatory process, and with his wide-ranging  personal contacts worldwide, he will be a powerful addition to our association, boosting the voice of tanker owners worldwide. I believe that this demonstrates the absolute commitment to continuous improvement shown by INTERTANKO.”

“I am extremely pleased and honoured to be invited to become a part of the INTERTANKO operation,” responds Angelo. I am ready for the challenges and opportunities of working with INTERTANKO’s members and staff, contributing to our common objective of cleaner and safer seas.”

INTERTANKO Managing Director Dr. Peter Swift is delighted to welcome Angelo to this key position in the association’s worldwide team. “His vast wealth of knowledge and experience will further strengthen the work of the Association. His presence in our Washington office is a further demonstration of our continuing commitment to serve our members in the Americas and worldwide.”
