INTERTANKO has received a bunker alert dealing with excessively corrosive MDO delivered in the Port of Rotterdam over the past several weeks. The alert includes some experience feedback from ships having used the fuel in question. Many of the vessels which received the problem fuel successfully debunkered it before use. In some instances, however, the product was used resulting in severe damage, expense and inconvenience including the following:

-: total black-out of the auxiliary engines at sea, with the vessel almost running aground in the Azores necessitating towing back to port;

-: severe pump plunger/barrel wear and damage resulting in expensive spare part replacement;

-: time consuming and expensive debunkering of the corrosive product accompanied by tank cleaning to fully remove the culprit product.

Such damages and expenses were, to some extent, encountered because several of the vessels involved had not considered it necessary to test the quality of diesel oils. Due to previous similar occurrences, DNV Petroleum Services (DNVPS) strongly recommends testing all fuels bunkered, both IFO and diesel oils. Some owners/operators have considered blending the corrosive MDO with on board IFO. It is DNVPS’s strong recommendation to fully debunker the contaminated product.
