The following is an example of the type claim we assist FDIP members with.

Owners invoiced charterers on 6 August 1999 for a claim for demurrage amounting to some USD 66,000. Charterers did not acknowledge receipt of the claim upon receipt. Owners sent a reminder to charterers via brokers one month after the claim had been submitted and two further

reminders in the months that followed. Despite these reminders charterers failed to respond to owners' requests for an update on the status of their claim. Owners then contacted INTERTANKO's Freight and Demurrage Information Pool for assistance. Within a week of the FDIP contacting charterers owners had received a reply to their demurrage claim. Owners made a counter offer after discussing with the FDIP one of the deductions that charterers had made.

Owners were able to refer to the advice they had received from us and this verification of their position assisted in the parties reaching agreement on this point. The claim having been agreed, payment was received in owners' account on 22 November 1999, some 16 days after owners has contacted the FDIP. Membership of the FDIP entitles a member to report an unlimited number
