PETROBRAS ADMITS BLAME

Petrobras have admitted that an error in the PE-2 pipeline project had been responsible for the greatest environmental disaster in Guanabara Bay.

Material fatigue - caused by an engineering project that did not consider density differences in the mangrove area soil where the pipes are set – and an error in a computer program allowed almost 1.3 - million oil litres of the Duque de Caxias Refinery to spill last. Initially, the company said the volume was 500-thousand litres. With the program error (an up-to-date version to avoid the millennium bug), spillage was only discovered about four hours later. The company’s president, Henri Reichstul, admitted also that the number of men (300) that Petrobras had mobilized on the day of the accident was not enough. Last Friday there were 1.150.  Source:  Weekly Brazil News Bulletin issued by Arabian Shipping do Brasil S/A and Jagma Comercio e Navegação Ltda.
