OPA 90 PHASE-OUT OF SINGLE HULL TANKERS - WARNING

Members should be aware that at the beginning of January 2000, pre-MARPOL tankers, over 30,000 GT which were built in 1976 and 1977 were phased out from US trade.

This is according to the OPA 90 phase-out and it is an earlier phase-out compared to the IMO limit of 25 years of age.

These tankers can, of course, trade to US EEZ at LOOP and the designated lightering zones. Be aware that the latter are defined in CFR 33, Part 156 and do not include lightering sites close to the coastline. Be also aware that offshore installations close to the coastline, such as Galveston, are not allowed to receive these tankers.
