The IMO Secretary-General is pleased to announce that a course on the Handling of Hazardous Bulk Liquids in Port is to be held at the IMO International Maritime Academy in Trieste, Italy 12 July to 7 September 2000 for selected candidates proposed by Member States.

The course provides training for those who have responsibility for the safe loading and unloading of bulk oil, chemicals or liquefied gas and is open to personnel from Maritime Administrations, port authorities and terminal or wharf operators having, or intended to have, such responsibility, including seagoing officers who may be planning to undertake such functions.

The course covers to a large extent the substance matter included in the IMO tanker safety courses, the course on oil pollution liability and compensation and on oil pollution preparedness and response. It covers the legislative background to the handling of these cargoes, basic theory of physics, chemistry and fire fighting, practical operations on board ships and at terminals, pollution contingency planning and practical oil spill clean-up operations. It emphasises correct ship/shore interface communications and explains the industry guides on the handling of these substances.

The course is conducted in English only and is limited to 12 participants. Participation will be free of charge.

Nomination of candidates by the Governments concerned should be made by downloading and printing theform(.pdf file 88kb), which should be forwarded to the Academy, through the relevant Italian Embassy, with an advance copy sent directly by fax to the Academy. A copy of the Application form should be sent to IMO.

To ensure consideration, all nominations should be made in time and should be received by the Academy on or before 9 June 2000. The selection of participants will take place soon after the deadline for the receipt of the forms and those selected will be informed accordingly by the Academy directly. The information will include particulars on travel and visa arrangements.
