SUSPENSION OF VETTING INSPECTIONS OF TANKERS BY THE NIGERIAN MARITIME INSPECTORATE WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT

INTERTANKO has been advised that with immediate effect the Maritime Inspectorate of the Nigerian National Maritime Authority in Lagos have suspended the vetting inspections of Tankers by the Marine Inspection Service (NIG) Limited in Nigerian waters, oil terminals, SPM berths and jetties.

Management of Shipping in Nigeria will continue to be directed under the Flag State Implementation and Port State Control programmes as per existing Nigeria Merchant Shipping Laws for Nigerian and Foreign Ships respectively.

Further directives on this subject will be communicated in due course. The announcement was made in Marine Shipping Notice No. M11/99, signed by Capt. I.N. Ntiaidem, Director of Marine Safety of the National Maritime Authority.

It is to be hoped that since Nigeria recently became a signatory to the West African MOU on PSC that this will be the future direction of Port State Control.
