NEW PANAMA INSPECTIONS FOR CHEMICAL TANKERS

Reports have been received regarding extra inspections for chemical tankers transiting the Panama Canal.

Having completed the General Panama Canal Commission Inspection, chemical tankers on their way to the Gatun Locks are now being asked to complete a second inspection covering the following:

  1. Pollution Prevention: including pipelines for cargo, hydraulic system, drop trays and plugs in scuppers.
  2. Hatch Cover Tightness: Using a sensitive gas analyser
  3. Cargo Compliance with cargo list of compliance certificate
  4. Fire Fighting and Safety Protective equipment certificates are checked along with the details of the service of the equipment by shore-based contractors.

It is believed that these random inspections by the Commission will continue and will depend largely on the cargo on board.
