NEXT WEEK:
FRANCE TO BRING EU PROPOSALS TO IMO

We understand that France will make a verbal statement to the opening of the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) meeting next week in which they would ask IMO to accept on its agenda, as a matter of urgency, measures aimed to improving the safety of oil transportation at sea.

France will probably not have next week a specific proposal but would only announce they (and EU implicitly) agreed to bring any post-Erika developments to the IMO. Concrete proposals for such measures could then be submitted to the next Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) session to be held early October. This is a positive answer to a general request that EU should not act independently and rather run their suggestions through IMO. According to our information, EU hopes that the French suggestion would not be rejected in IMO by procedural matters.
