Mexico:  Coatzacoalcos/Pajaritos – Cancellation of night traffic
Floating debris threatens safety

As per official notification dated 11 June 2000, received from the Coatzacoalcos Pilots, all night traffic in Pajaritos is suspended until further notice due to the rainy season, to avoid damages to ships’ propellers caused by debris floating in the river.

Brunei : Seria – Light dues implemented 1 June 2000 postponed
Successful lobbying by INTERTANKO and others

Without pre-warning the Marine Department of Brunei has implemented light dues for calling at the SBM at Seria as from 1 June 2000 at the rate of USD 0.10/GT per month (arrival and departure considered separately up to a maximum of USD 0.40/GT per month).

It is our understanding, however, that the local shipping agencies have protested and appealed to the Marine Department against the collection of light dues and requested that the light dues be withheld.  INTERTANKO supports this request and has sent a complaint to the Marine Department of Brunei regarding the lack of pre-warning, and requested the implementation to be postponed till 1 September 2000.  Furthermore, we have requested the Worldscale Association to study the new charges and how they will influence the basis rate.

We are pleased to inform that we have since received a copy of letter from the Marine Department of Brunei confirming that the collection of light dues for vessels calling at the SBM has been postponed without specifying a new date of application.  Our members will be kept updated.
