COLLISION OF TWO VESSELS IN THE MARACAIBO LAKE CHANNEL

On 29 June 2000 at 1315 hours local time, a chemical tanker outbound from El Tablazo collided with a tanker outbound from Puerto Miranda in the proximity of the fairway buoy no. 57 (in front of Puerto Miranda).

No oil spill was reported, only a fresh water tank on the tanker was damaged and all water leaked out.

Maracaibo Harbor Master ordered the chemical tanker to anchor at Maracaibo Anchorage and the tanker off the sea buoy “EM”.

For the time being laden ships bound for Maracaibo from Puerto Miranda can only pass the normal route via the “EM” buoy).
