MARACAIBO LAKE CHANNEL SILTING AT MALECON

A report from a master on a tanker owned by an INTERTANKO member indicates that the channel near buoy B28 is badly silted (ref. BA chart 1519).  There is an unofficial “dog leg” now being used by pilots as the dredger is not keeping up with the silt.

This further illustrates the unsatisfactory situation in the Maracaibo Lake and the hazards loaded tankers are being exposed to on a regular basis.

INTERTANKO is currently exploring how to effect immediate dredging on the spot together with a general expansion of the dredging program.
