THE RECENT BAN ON OFFSHORE BUNKERING IN BRAZIL IS LIFTEDTHE RECENT BAN ON OFFSHORE BUNKERING IN BRAZIL IS LIFTED

With reference to our Weekly NEWS No. 32/2000 regarding this issue, the ban has been lifted according to information from a Brazilian  source.  The ban on offshore bunkering came into force after pressure from IBAMA (the Brazilian Environmental Institute) due to a bunker oil spill off-shore from São Fransisco do Sul 1 August 2000.

It is expected that heavy fines will be applied to Petrobras.  Although IBAMA continues to be critical of bunkering offshore the port of São Fransisco do Sul, it looks as if an agreement has been reached and that IBAMA will permit Petrobras to continue the operation.
