The incident last week involving the product tanker Castor and the continuing failure of any nation to offer the vessel a port to refuge has highlighted INTERTANKO’s long standing initiative on this issue.

INTERTANKO first raised it in the context of the revision of the international Salvage convention in the 1980’s in IMO, but the ‘not in my backyard’ syndrome prevailed.  INTERTANKO raised the issue again in a European context in March 2000, when we made a submission.
