INTERTANKO was represented at the second Gothenburg Shipping Week Conference this week amongst a host of Swedish and international speakers including ITOPF, Concordia Maritime, Prisma Consultants and Preem Oil. Focusing on the transportation of oil by sea and the Scandinavian influence on this industry the issues of quality, safety, accident reduction and pollution prevention were high on the agenda.

Preem Oils’ Ulf Holberg explained the new requirements coming into force regarding vapour recovery on board all vessels being used by the company together with Preems’ continued support of the SIRE vetting system. On pollution prevention in the port, Tom Westman (Port of Gothenburg) also explained that ship pollution had been a major issue for them although this was now diminishing as shipping standards improved. In particular, Mr Westman pointed to the depots as the main source of oil pollution into the port.

The seminar having opened with the Chain of Responsibility concept and the requirement for quality from all links in the industry, INTERTANKO’s philosophy was carried forward with Concordia’s explanation of the new V-max concept and pollution prevention and ITOPF’s practical focus on what can happen when prevention fails.

A good discussion took place with a number of INTERTANKO’s Swedish members partaking in the proceedings.
