SUMMARY OF INTERTANKO POST-ERIKA TANKER SAFETY INITIATIVES

While the oil pollution resulting from the loss of the Erika was a tragedy for the environment, the accident added urgency to many of the issues that have been on INTERTANKO’s agenda for several years, and increased the possibility of effective measures being implemented by the industry and relevant authorities. A broad spectrum of quality initiatives has been proposed by the EU in the aftermath of the Erika. These packages of EU proposals have elements which impinge on international maritime environmental issues and regulations.
