REPORT FROM BRUSSELS MEETINGS 26/27 MARCH AS FOLLOW-UP OF EU PROPOSALS – ‘ERIKA I’ AND ‘ERIKA II’ PACKAGES

INTERTANKO representatives held further meetings with EP rapporteurs on 26 and 27 March in Brussels as part of INTERTANKO’s follow-up of the various EU proposals emanating from the sinking of the Erika (the so-called ‘Erika I’ and ‘Erika II’ packages.)

INTERTANKO was represented in the various meetings by the Chairman of the Vetting Committee, Lars Mossberg, MD, Peter Swift and Marine Manager, Howard Snaith, as well as INTERTANKO’s Brussels advisors Ketil Djonne and Aida Axelsson.

The main purpose of the meetings was to provide two of the three EP rapporteurs on ‘Erika II’ (MEP Dirk Sterckx on the monitoring and reporting directive, MEP Emmanouil Mastorakis on the EMSA proposal) with written and oral input for their ‘draft reports’ which are to be presented to the full EP Transport Committee for debate on the 24/25 of April. The meeting with one of the lead rapporteurs on ‘Erika I’ (MEP Mark Watts) concerned outstanding issues of Port State Control as well as issues related to the proposals to require the retro-fitting of Vessel Data Recorders (VDR).  An updated status report on INTERTANKO’s follow-up with the EU on VDRs will be given in next weeks Weekly NEWS., however background information is available by clicking here

An informal meeting was also held with the Commission’s Head of Unit for Maritime Safety, Willem de Ruiter. A meeting with the third rapporteur, MEP Alain Esclope, on the COPE fund proposal is planned for the 3 of April in Strasbourg.
