PORT ISSUES

AUSTRALIA/ALL PORTS - FOOT AND MOUTH INSPECTION CONTROLS FROM 3 APRIL 2001

In view of the many incidents of Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) reported in various countries, the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) has implemented strict inspection of vessels arriving Australian ports from international waters.

Please click here to view the document of a list of countries free from FMD and temporary restrictions on goods imported from the European Union countries where positive cases of FMD have been identified.

SYRIA/BANIAS - GRATUITIES BEING DEMANDED

It has been brought to our attention by one of our members that while discharging cargo at Banias, the operation was abruptly called off and all work suspended. The pilot deliberately created a panic situation which almost caused injury to a seaman on deck. Thereafter, the vessel was boarded by representatives from the agency, customs and health authorities each demanding cigarettes, paint and whiskey.

Similar incidents have been brought to INTERTANKO’s attention in other ports and we have taken up these cases with the respective Port Authorities.  The Port Authority of Banias will be approached, requesting it to take action against such practices.

Our members will be kept informed of developments.
