On 3 April 2001, INTERTANKO had the opportunity to host a delegation from ClassNK who visited INTERTANKO'S head office in Oslo.

The main purpose of this very constructive and mutually beneficial meeting was to familiarize INTERTANKO with the ClassNK activities and the new condition assessment programme (CAP), which has recently been introduced. According to ClassNK, they are upgrading their CAP programme to provide greater consistency with similar systems adopted by other major class societies, including the rating system.

It was also interesting to note that the average age of the ClassNK tankers is only 10.9 years and that ClassNK will not accept tankers older than 15 years. Thus, it would appear that ClassNK would perform THE CAP programme either on younger tankers than the other class societies do or on tankers which are not classed by ClassNK. As part of the CAP programme, ClassNK performs a fatigue strength assessment of representative stress concentration areas in order to identify critical areas or locations prior to the survey on site.
