500 tankers now on order – J. Grieg

As per 30 May 2001, a total of 500 tankers or 60.3 million dwt are now on order. This is the highest level recorded since the early 1970s, but still only 30% of the orderbook in January 1974 of 202 million dwt. The May 2001 orderbook includes 96 VLCCs of 29.5 million dwt, compared to 357 VLCCs of 112 million dwt on order in January 1974.

However, the Aframax is the tanker segment that has had the steepest increase in ordering in 2001. The orderbook for tankers 80,000 to 120,000 dwt has increased from 67 at the end of December 2000 to 98 at the end of May 2001, or from 7.3 to 10.6 million dwt.
