The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) has written to several international shipping associations advising of its intention to launch a campaign against the Liberian government and shipowners using the Liberian Register. ITF refers to human rights abuses against the Liberian population and atrocities in Sierra Leone.

ISF have received a similar letter and have prepared a response for their members, please click here to view.

INTERTANKO has spoken to LISCR who remain in close contact with the ITF leadership. LISCR have been advised that this threatened action will not involve harassment of, or interruption to, the operation of Liberian-flag vessels.  Further, the ITF has indicated to LISCR that it openly acknowledges Liberia as one of the better-quality open registers with a sound record involving seafarers. LISCR has also advised that if INTERTANKO members have any questions, they are encouraged to contact LISCR directly.
