This week INTERTANKO met Mr Fotis Karamitsos prior to his taking up his new position later this month as the European Commission’s  Director for Marine Transport, replacing Georgette Lalis, who resigned from the post in March this year. INTERTANKO MD Peter Swift was accompanied by Executive Committee member Captain Peter Raes and our EU consultant Ketil Djønne. The meeting included an overview and review of the status of the two post-Erika packages, including the voicing of INTERTANKO’s outstanding concerns, as well as more general issues regarding classification, flag state and port state concerns.

Mr  Karamitsos indicated that, following the emphasis placed on “Safety” post-Erika,  “Quality” and increased “Transparency” were now uppermost on the EC agenda. His other interests include the promotion of IT within Transport and he saw several new opportunities for the shipping industry which he would be discussing within the Commission and partners outside.  He also said that his preference would generally be for the EC to develop voluntary programmes with Industry rather than impose excessive controls – an approach welcomed by the Association.
