CLARIFICATION AND APOLOGY: WEEKLY NEWS ARTICLE - 42 INCIDENTS RECORDED 1H01

Lloyd’s Register has brought to our attention their observation that our reference to Class in our Weekly NEWS article (No. 26, 30 June 2001)  ‘42 INCIDENTS RECORDED 1H01’ may have unfairly created the impression that Class was a contributing factor to the incidents.  This was clearly not our intention. Lloyd's Register has also advised that we incorrectly attributed a number of the tankers involved as being classed with Lloyd's Register, which we accept was not the case. We therefore unreservedly apologise to Lloyd's Register, as well as to the other classification societies, for any unfortunate misrepresentation that resulted from this article. The intention of the article was to draw the members’ attention to tanker incidents and to encourage a more systematic and comprehensive reporting and thereafter analysis of tanker incidents in order to identify key factors and the root causes of accidents. The incidents for the first half of 2001 involved tankers of all ages, flag and class and were by and large related to the operation of the ship.
