The next meeting of INTERTANKO’s Council is scheduled for Friday 26 October.  The timing has been determined to make it possible for members to also attend an international seminar on tanker safety, pollution prevention, spill response and compensation organised by the International Tanker Owners’ Pollution Federation Limited (ITOPF) and the Oil Companies’ International Marine Forum (OCIMF) in association with Ceres Hellenic Enterprises Ltd.  The seminar opens with a welcome reception in the evening of Wednesday 24 October.  The seminar will start in the morning of 25 October and will end around 1700 hours.  There will be no charge for attending the seminar, reception and lunch, but attendees will be responsible for arranging and paying for their own travel and hotel accommodation.  The organisers have listed the following probable seminar topics:

* Recent Developments in the International Oil Spill Oil Spill Compensation Regimes

* The Views of OCIMF, shipowners and the International Group of P&I Clubs on these developments

*  Role of Classification Societies in Pollution Prevention

*  Charterer's Responsibilities in the Safety Chain

*  Shipowner's Responsibilities

*  The SIRE Vetting Programme

*  Role of ITOPF in Preparing for and Responding to Oil and Chemical Spills

*  Current Trends in the Organisation and Management of Spill Response

*  Role of the Hellenic Coast Guard in Tanker Safety, Pollution Prevention and Spill Response

*  ISM and Environmental Management Systems

*  HELMEPA's Role in Educating Seafarers and Children

It is envisaged that there will also be a panel discussion at the end of the morning and afternoon sessions involving the speakers and invited panellists, as well as a small exhibition featuring, amongst other things, the work of HELMEPA.
