BUNKER ALERT: HIGH SEDIMENT FUELS IN GENOA, ITALY

Last week HFO samples with sediment content exceeding the maximum level in ISO 8217:96 Fuel Specifications (0.10 %m/m) were received. The sediment levels ranged from 0.16 to 0.22% m/m TSP (Total Sediment Potential). This level of sediment indicates that the fuel contains suspended solids which could cause an increase in sludge formation and lead to clogging of fuel treatment equipment and filters.

All of the high sediment incidents involved fuels with viscosities <130 mm2/s @ 50 Deg.C (ie, IF 180 grade). Those who have bunkered in Genoa recently should take the necessary precautions to trial run the fuel at their earliest convenience, if possible before leaving port.
