A common source of a Tanker Charter Party demurrage dispute relates to the apparent delays caused by the alleged non compliance with the warranties contained in the Pumping Clause of the Charter Party. This publication defines and explains the basis for the undertaking of the relevant calculations pursuant to the requirements normally set out in a standard pumping clause of a Tanker Charter Party together with an analysis of the meaning of the terms of the pumping clause.

The publication identifies the origins and basis for the equations used and their application within the calculations required to determine the rate of discharge from a tanker given the diverse parameters and their functions within the equation. Worked examples of the diverse calculations are provided as guidance for the undertaking of the calculations together with suggestions as to alternative methods for the monitoring of the efficiency of pumping of cargoes.

An explanation is also provided of the impact on pumping of placing pumps in series and parallel (the impact of a shore booster pump) with regard to the recorded pressures and rate of flow during a discharge operation.
