U.S. Navy assists USCG with maritime homeland security

The U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Area issued a press release on 5 November 2001 reporting that the U.S. Navy had assigned tactical control of certain naval vessels to the Coast Guard for the purpose of coastal patrol and maritime homeland security operations along the U.S. West Coast.

Although the naval vessels will be manned and operated by naval crews, a small team of specially trained Coast Guard law enforcement officers will be deployed aboard each of these vessels to conduct law enforcement boarding of vessels at sea prior to entry into a U.S. port.
