The Bahamas has now ratified MARPOL Annex VI – Limitation of Air Pollution from Ships.

This is an important breakthrough and a good example to others, particularly in view of Governments’ lack of interest in ratifying this instrument. To the best of our knowledge the countries that have enforced Annex VI in their national rules are: Bahamas, Norway, Sweden and Singapore. MARPOL Annex VI will enter into force twelve months after accession by 15 States that between them represent at least 50% of the world’s merchant shipping tonnage. INTERTANKO is in contact with other Governments, including those of EU countries, to promote ratification and achieve this end.
