As previously reported, on 29 November INTERTANKO organised a Round Table Meeting with industry and other interested bodies to discuss what INTERTANKO and the industry could contribute to improve even further the safety of the traffic through the Bosporus, Sea of Marmara and Strait of Canakkale (Dardanelles).

The meeting was attended by some 40 representatives from local INTERTANKO members and associate members, the Turkish Chamber of Shipping, the Pilots Association, the Coastal Safety and Salvage Administration, TURMEPA, Istanbul Technical University and others. INTERTANKO was represented by Lars Carlsson, Chairman, Peter Swift, Managing Director, and Dragos Rauta, Technical Director with Regional Responsibility for Turkey.

The general consensus of the meeting was that the industry should attempt to jointly develop a Code of Conduct and Good Practices that would not only promote awareness of the current rules but would also add practical means for safe implementation and monitoring of good practices. As a first step it was agreed that INTERTANKO should seek to organise a Pilots/Masters Workshop in Istanbul. These experienced professionals should be the first to be consulted on practical and technical incentives for safe transit and good communication between the ship and the local waterway management.
