PARTNERSHIPS IN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT FOR THE SEAS OF EAST ASIA (PEMSEA) 8TH STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING

The meeting was hosted by the RO Korea’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fishery (MOMAF) and was held in Pusan South Korea 19-21 March 2002.

Government representatives from participating countries of Cambodia, PR China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, RO Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam presented their reports regarding participation in and implementation of PEMSEA activities, describing the progress made, challenges and impacts, and recommendations for future actions. Japan had recently joined and was participating for the first time. INTERTANKO participated as an observer together with Nippon Foundation, ILO, EARL, and IMO Global Ballast Project.

INTERTANKO and other international agencies and institutions were invited to identify possible areas of cooperation with the aim of strengthening local, national, and regional capacities for the improved management of the environment and resources in the Seas of East Asia.

An initial review of PEMSEA’s initiatives has revealed possible areas of cooperation between INTERTANKO and PEMSEA e.g. those relating to port safety, oil spill response, and more importantly, the focus on the ratification and implementation of international conventions by various countries in the region. INTERTANKO is also participating actively in a PEMSEA initiated project – the Marine Electronic Highway (MEH) - with the first phase in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.
