Round Table Chairmen review key issues

The Chairmen of the Round Table of maritime associations (INTERTANKO, Intercargo, ICS and BIMCO) met in London on 6 January to review issues of common concern for shipowners and operators and to agree on joint actions. This meeting was under the rotating chairmanship of Mr. Lars Carlsson.

Items on the agenda included a review of the industry’s relationship with IACS and the continuing emphasis placed by owners on newbuilding standards and design safety margins for new and existing ships. The value of recent initiatives with tri-partite meetings with shipbuilders and classification societies was confirmed and further meetings are now being planned.

Other topics covered included the responsibilities of flag states and ways for the industry to establish appropriate criteria for “acceptable flags”; ongoing concerns over piracy; and possible means of involving insurance and financing interests in addressing the problem of substandard shipping. The Prestige accident was also discussed together with the reactions of the associations to the various proposals and regulations now under debate by EU governments and officials. The meeting recognised that the ship was substantially intact when forced out to sea and re-affirmed the critical importance of all countries establishing Places of Refuge.
