Strike continues in Venezuela with partial return to work

The national strike is continuing although some employees, such as in the education and food industries, are returning to work. PDVSA has fired 168 seamen and 54 employees in the administration bringing the total PDVSA administrative staff fired to around 5,000. New crude supply from the Monogas State east of San Jose began to be transferred via pipelines to the Jose terminal on 24 January. Gas is expected to be supplied to the Amua Bay and Punta Cardon refineries. In general, production is resuming slowly, and the operational situation at the oil terminals appears to have improved somewhat. As of 29 January 2003 eight vessels were loading/unloading while 30 were awaiting berthing instructions at the various terminals. The Carter Centre negotiators are continuing their efforts, and positive results may be obtained within the next 15 to 30 days.
