Lars Carlsson participates at European Parliamentary symposium

INTERTANKO Chairman, Lars Carlsson, participated in the session on ‘Maritime Security and Its Cost’ at this week’s European Parliamentary Symposium in Brussels.

The Symposium covered a diverse mix of topics including the causes of marine pollution, managing oil slicks, the prevention of terrorism, and national, European and international maritime law. The latter session included debate on the legality of various actions taken by the EU coastal states in the aftermath of the Prestige accident and the European proposal currently before the IMO. A copy of the transactions will be provided in a few weeks and will be made available to members.

In his intervention http://www.intertanko.com/about/presentations/ , Lars Carlsson set out the requirements of the new ISPS Code and highlighted the challenges of meeting the 1 July 2004 deadline. He told the delegates of the tanker industry’s determination to meet this deadline and the positive actions now well underway. He stressed, however, the importance of both the Recognised Security Organisations and the Ports being equally prepared and the dependence on this of the industry.

The importance of identifying and addressing actual threats was highlighted and using the Limburg as an example, he indicated the commercial role of states in taking counter-terrorism measures. Finally, he referred to the loyalty of tanker crews and lamented the fact that latterly they have often been treated with suspicion and even as potential criminals.
