Norway protests against ban of tankers in Spanish EEZ

On 30 May Norway delivered a demarche to Spain as a formal protest against Spain’s action of requiring transiting Norwegian flagged tankers to navigate outside the Spanish 200 nautical mile EEZ.

Further to our article in Weekly NEWS No. 22 , on 30 May Norway delivered a demarche, or diplomatic reproach, to Spain as a formal protest against Spain’s action of requiring lawfully operating, transiting Norwegian flagged tankers to navigate outside the Spanish 200 nautical mile EEZ. The protest noted that the actions of the Spanish government were in contravention of Spain's obligations and Norway's rights as established by the UN Convention of the Law of the Seas. The demarche requests that the matter be treated with high priority, and a formal response from Spain has been requested. Both the Norwegian Shipowners Association (NSA) and INTERTANKO have been involved in encouraging this protest to be lodged and have welcomed it accordingly.

Masters who receive instructions to navigate outside the Spanish, or any other, 200 nautical mile EEZ are advised to lodge a written complaint and request the legal grounds for issuing such instructions. Members are also recommended to consider adding to a complaint that a claim for compensation for extra costs and bunkers caused by deviation from the planned voyage will be considered. Members are advised to contact INTERTANKO in the event of similar incidents.
