Debate on 16 September in London on accelerated single-hull phase-out

As Europe's determination to further accelerate the phase-out of single-hull tankers continues to generate considerable heat, an informal technical debate has been organised next month during Seatrade's London International Maritime Convention. For those not familiar with the British concept of a debate, a motion is proposed and opposed by several speakers on each side before the event is thrown open to those on the floor to join in the discussion. After a short recapitulation by each side, the floor votes by show of hands whether it supports or rejects the motion.

With a motion entitled 'The Death of the Single-Hull Tanker?', the arguments over whether accelerated phase-out makes environmental and economic sense and whether double-hulls are the solution will be debated by INTERTANKO Managing Director Peter Swift and IBIA Vice-Chairman Don Gregory on the one hand, and by First International Chairman Paul Slater and Friends of the Earth's Roger Lankester on the other. Koji Sekimizu, Director of IMO's Marine Environment Division, will give a keynote address.

The debate, at 1430 hrs on Tuesday 16th September in the ExCel complex in London's Dockland, has been organised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects.
