INTERTANKO lecture on ‘The needs and effects of incident management and media response plans’, 9 December 2003, London

Proper media engagement following a crisis is ever more crucial and today involves not only potentially crippling liabilities but also issues of criminality. INTERTANKO is therefore planning a series of lectures for members, examining cases with those who have had to face up to media scrutiny in a crisis, to share their experiences and the lessons learned, and to provide a perspective on the way forward for others who may find themselves in similar circumstances.

In the first of these lectures, ‘The COONEY Lecture’, Captain Peter Cooney, who is widely acknowledged as having presided over one of the most successful media operations in relation to the “Sea Empress” casualty in Milford Haven in 1996, shares his experiences and for the first time talks about how the operation was handled, the strategy formulated, and the pressures that had to be faced, as well the planning and preparedness that was undertaken well before the event.

Equally important, Captain Cooney will look at the media dimension in facing the current issues of ‘security’, ‘potential for terrorist attacks’ and ‘criminality’ and give his views on the way forward when the media come knocking at the door.

This London lecture, which is free to INTERTANKO members, should not be missed as it provides a unique look behind the scenes of a major casualty.

The lecture will take place on 9 December 2003, 1100 – 1400 hours (with buffet lunch) at INTERTANKO’s London office, St Clare House, 30-33 Minories, London EC3N 1DD.

Numbers are limited so please register early.

To register, please contact Sally Woulfe.

At its previous meeting the agenda covered the following issues: possible effects of the Prestige accident concerning phase-out, age restrictions, liability and carriage of heavy fuel oil.
