Discussions held with European Shipbuilders

As an extension of the Tripartite meetings held between shipbuilders, classification societies and far eastern shipbuilders in Seoul last September, representatives of owners and classification societies met with their counterparts in the Association of European Shipbuilders and Shiprepairers (AWES) last week.

The meeting at AWES offices in Brussels was attended by officials of AWES and European shipbuilders, INTERTANKO (also on behalf of INTERCARGO), ICS, BIMCO, OCIMF and RINA in its capacity as the current chairman of IACS. Discussions included a review of the background to the Tripartite meetings, the agenda and outcomes of the Seoul meetings, and a review of possible future contacts and involvement. Among other topics discussed were coatings for ballast and cargo tanks and issues associated with coating specification, surface preparation and application, and design-related matters at IMO such as goal-based standards, the protection of bunker tanks and manoeuvrability standards. Further meetings with AWES are anticipated later this year.
