INTERTANKO Vice-Chairman and Regional Manager visit to Shanghai

The Association’s Vice-Chairman, Mr KH Koo, and Regional Manager for Asia-Pacific, John Fawcett-Ellis, recently visited tanker operators Nanjing Tanker Corporation and China Shipping (Group) Company in Shanghai.

The Regional Manager went on to meet various members of the shipping community in Shanghai, including INTERTANKO members Odfjell and associate members, Ince & Co and Wikborg and Rein. Notably a meeting was held with the Maritime Safety Administration in Shanghai, which is responsible for port state control, pollution avoidance and safety of navigation in the Shanghai province. Issues discussed included the safety of navigation on the Huangpu river. The opening of a dialogue with this important administration is much appreciated.

This visit was the first in a series of visits that INTERTANKO will make to China this year, the next being in connection with the Asian Regional Panel, which will meet in Shanghai on 25 February, on the same days as an INTERTANKO tanker seminar entitled ‘The Tanker World Today’ chaired by former INTERTANKO Chairman, Mr Basil Papachristidis.

The Association’s focus on China will continue with visits to Dalian, Beijing and Ningbo later in the year, the aim being to raise the profile of the Association in this country most vital to world trade today. The dialogue with the Marine Safety Administrations of China will be continued at port, province and central level.
