INTERTANKO hosts “The Tanker World Today” seminar in Shanghai

As a prelude to the Mare Forum conference in Shanghai the Association hosted a seminar entitled “The Tanker World Today”on 25 February 2004. The seminar was moderated by the Association’s Honorary Member and past Chairman, Mr Basil Papachristidis, Hellespont Steamship Corporation, who, with considerable skill and flair, led a distinguished panel of speakers as they highlighted some of the key issues facing the industry today.

Dr Martin Stopford, Clarksons, gave the audience his thoughts on the tanker market. Mr Robert Bishop, V. Ships, focused on the ISPS Code and the 1 July deadline. Mr Frederick Tsao, IMC Group highlighted the renaissance of the shipping industry. Mr Hans de Goeij, Green Award explained the advantages of their scheme, which sought to reward the operators of the vessels run in an environmentally friendly way. Mr Richard Leslie, IACS focused on the importance of the classification societies working towards greater uniformity of standards. INTERTANKO’s MD Dr Peter Swift led a defence of the IMO as the legitimate organisation for regulating the shipping industry whilst challenging states to ratify conventions before they seek to criticise the IMO for being too slow.

Dr Swift and Mr Fawcett-Ellis then took part in the Mare Forum conference entitled “China Shipping 2004”, which was held on 26 and 27 February. This well attended conference featured leading industry executives from China, the United States and Europe. The predominant focus of the topics covered was the shipping market in China, while the final sessions debated issues such as: “Does the Chinese legal, financial and ethical framework meet the needs of China’s maritime growth?” and “Should we fear or celebrate the growth of maritime China?” While the growth in oil imports was noted to be significantly less spectacular than in the dry sector and in containers, the anticipated increase from 100 million tonnes p.a. in 2005 to 150 mt in 2010 and to 250 mt in 2020 is nevertheless impressive. As with other shipping sectors the need for parallel improvements in the ports, terminals, water depths and pilotage improvements was highlighted by many speakers, as well as the recognition that further de-bottlenecking of the distribution infrastructure would be necessary.
