FSI12 at IMO, 15-19 March 2004, London

The 12th session of the Subcommittee on Flag State Implementation runs for five days. Key items on the agenda will be the model audit scheme and reception facilities.

EP hearing on Barents Sea oil, 16 March 2004, Brussels

The European Parliament’s hearing on oil exploration and transportation in the Barents Sea will take place on 16 March 2004. INTERTANKO’s deputy managing director Svein Ringbakken will be making a presentation addressing the issues from the tanker owners’ perspective.

INTERTANKO North American Panel meeting, 22 March 2004, Stamford CT, USA

The INTERTANKO North American Panel (NAP) will hold its 15th meeting on Monday, 22 March 2004 at the Westin Stamford Hotel in connection with the CMA Conference. Richard du Moulin will chair the Panel.

On this occasion there will be two sessions:

8.30 am10 a.m: - for members only. This session aims to analyse and review INTERTANKO’s priorities and work programme.

10 am – 2 pm: - open session for members and guests.

International Chemical and Oil Pollution Conference, 22-24 March 2004 Singapore

This conference is being organised by the Maritime and Port Association of Singapore.  One of the sessions will focus on the Prestige incident with the paper on the shipowners’ perspective being presented by our Executive Committee member, Joseph Kwok, CEO, American Eagle Tankers. Capt A.R. Sabnis, of TESMA Singapore will present a paper on “Ship vetting for pollution prevention - can it be better standardised?”. Other sessions will focus on media management in the event of a pollution incident and the recovery of heavy oil from the sea.

NationalMaritimeMuseum conference, 23-24 March 2004, Greenwich

INTERTANKO will attend and have a stand at a two-day international conference at the NationalMaritimeMuseum, Greenwich, 23-24 March 2004, which will deal with the human and technological dimensions of maritime disasters and safety at sea. International agencies, leading academics, regulatory authorities and ocean-user groups will examine the challenges facing the industry, the role of regulation and the opportunities to improve practices to save lives. The conference will focus on the search for best practice in areas ranging from research and design to navigation and search and rescue. In addition, issues affecting changing sea-use, governance and work practices will be highlighted. The role of training, education and capacity-building in improving safety at sea will also be discussed.

ISTEC meeting, 26-27 March 2004, Dubai

The INTERTANKO Safety, Technical and Environmental Committee (ISTEC) will hold its 24th meeting at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 26-27 March 2004.  Among the important issues on the agenda will be the election of a new ISTEC Chairman. Dr. Nikos Mikelis will chair the meeting even though he has completed his four-year term as chairman.

The Associate Members Committee meeting, 29 March 2004, Dubai

The AMC will conduct its bi-annual meeting on 29 March 2004 at 08.30 coinciding with the INTERTANKO Annual Meeting and Tanker Event.

The agenda is still under preparation but will feature such issues as compliance with the ISPS Code, extended guarantees for newbuildings, costs and consequences of the new automated manifest (AMS) reporting requirements at US ports, together with a review of the Committee’s Action Plan. The Committee will, as usual, perform screening of applications for associate membership and present its recommendations to the Council.

Focus will be placed on how the AMC’s work can be interfaced with other INTERTANKO committees and the Council and Executive Committee.
