Oil Record Book - Part 1 (Machinery Space Operation)

The US Coast Guard established in October 2001 the Oily Water Separation Systems Task Force to examine a wide range of issues relating to machinery and equipment used to manage oily bilge water on commercial vessels; and to develop recommendations for the maritime industry on how to reach its environmental goals and ensure compliance with MARPOL and the Clean Water Act.

As a follow-up action INTERTANKO’s Safety, Technical and Environmental Committee (ISTEC) has developed the ‘Oil Record Book - Part 1 (Machinery Space Operation) Guide for correct entries’ to address the increasing problems of ships being detained and fined (particularly in the USA) due to equipment malfunction, and also to aid management of oil-water separators in the engine room.

The Guide contains:

  • instructions and interpretations on how to properly record all related operations   as per MARPOL 73/78, ANNEX I, Regulation 20
  • list of operations to be recorded
  • frequently found errors or mistakes
  • detailed examples for all related operations

The Guide is available in printed format and is structured to facilitate integration in the document management system of any individual INTERTANKO member on board and in the office.   It can also be used as a training tool for seafarers.

A Guide to the Vetting Process, 5th edition

INTERTANKO handles many enquiries for up-to-date information on the different ship inspection systems which form an essential part of the tanker vetting process.

To overcome the lack of available information on vetting inspection systems, and to assist tanker crews and onshore personnel to better understand, and to be better prepared for, vetting inspections, INTERTANKO has published an expanded fifth edition of its 'A Guide to the Vetting Process'. The publication provides a concise yet comprehensive description of the principal tanker vetting systems.

Tanker Specification Awareness Guide now available

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote safer tanker shipping, the INTERTANKO Safety, Technical and Environmental Committee (ISTEC) has produced this Awareness Guide covering the technical specifications of tankers by drawing on members' knowledge, experience and their willingness to share information for their mutual benefit and for the benefit of the tanker industry as a whole.

The main aim is to provide assistance in the process of investigating, evaluating and making informed choices, and thus reinforcing final decisions, during the negotiation of a newbuilding contract with a shipyard.

A Guide to Tanker Charters (2001)

'A Guide to Tanker Charters' is a successor to the observations (or commentaries) on tanker charterparties that INTERTANKO has published in the past, written by Harvey Williams, Vice-Chairman of INTERTANKO's Documentary Committee.

This important publication (328 pages) goes well beyond the two earlier editions as it is the first time a comprehensive approach has been taken to both time and voyage charterparties for tankers. It has become the standard source of reference for those regularly involved in fixing tankers or resolving tanker charterparty disputes.
