Chris Horrocks is the Seatrade Personality for 2004

INTERTANKO salutes Chris Horrocks, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping and the International Shipping Federation, named as Seatrade Personality 2004 this week at the Seatrade Awards Ceremony Dinner in London's Guildhall.

After His Royal Highness The Duke of York had presented the awards commending outstanding achievements of the last year, over 400 members of the maritime community applauded Horrocks "for providing a balanced and considered voice for the shipping industry on all the major issues it has confronted over the past thirty years".

In presenting the awards, His Royal Highness said, ‘Since I left the Royal Navy and have undertaken the role as the UK’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment, I realise how shipping works, how goods are transported around the world and what the shipping industry does for the world economy.’ Horrocks has been helping people realise the significance of the shipping industry since he became ICS Secretary General in 1978.

His ability to think through the facts and then put over a fair and unbiased summary of the shipping industry's position on the major issues of the day have made him a key part of this business and an indispensable figure in shipping circles. His easy charm and unflappability were put to the test as he gave a spontaneous speech of thanks to those present, assuring them that he had no inkling that he had been chosen as Seatrade Personality until the Seatrade compere started to describe the winner.

We look forward to many more years of close cooperation with Chris Horrocks.
